Offbeat is basically a liberated form of percussion. Most
percussionists stick to playing drums, but to Offbeat everything's a
drum: brooms, garbage cans, basketballs, chairs, the sticks that break
off their brooms -- if it makes a noise when it's hit, Offbeat will hit
it.
Offbeat doesn't just hit stuff, though, it hits stuff in a tightly choreographed, entertaining, and musical way. It has performed at such notable events and venues as the Busker's Festival, the NAC, the Tourism Awards Night at the Museum of Civilization, and does a variety of other corporate gigs.
Offbeat regularly travels to various competitions (which they tend to win). During a recent New York trip, group members were able to catch a performance of STOMP, the group on which Offbeat was originally based. They then went on to win the judges award at a New York percussion festival with their own performance.
If you want to be in Offbeat, they hold auditions at the beginning of the school year, and again about halfway through the year (returning members don't need to audition). Their practices are usually before school on Tuesday and Thursday, and are run by Mr. Massie. Offbeat also counts towards a music credit.
